Better Than Pumpkin Pie Cake is the perfect Thanksgiving or fall dessert. With a cake layer on the bottom, and a crunchy brown sugar topping, it is divine!
When we were living in Provo we had dinner with a nice couple in our ward for FHE one evening. The wife, Miriam, made us an amazing pumpkin dessert, and we were instantly friends. I have no idea where she got it, but I haven’t seen a recipe quite like it on Pinterest, so I thought I would pass along the one she gave me.
It is the perfect mix of cake and bar and pumpkin and cake. The different textures of the cake and pumpkin layers with the extra crunch of the top layer is the perfect combination! It really is, Better Than Pumpkin Pie Cake.
It’s a pretty simple recipe to make, and the little work it does take is completely worth it. Better Than Pumpkin Pie Cake is the perfect Thanksgiving or fall dessert. With a cake layer on the bottom, and a crunchy brown sugar topping, it is divine!

I have a very similar recipe that I’ve been making for over 25 years. Once I made this dessert, my family preferred it over regular pumpkin pie. It is a very good dessert.

My family prefers it over pumpkin pie, too!

I’m visiting from the link up and am following! I have to say, it hasn’t been until just this past year that I have gotten into pumpkin. I never liked pumpkin pie (probably the texture) so I just assumed I didn’t like pumpkin. I’m so glad I was wrong! I think my husband would love me forever if I surprised him with this. Thanks for sharing!
Chelsea says
I’m so glad you have entered the world of pumpkin! I seriously could eat pumpkin things every day from October to November (and I do!). I hope your husband loves it (and loves you forever, which I’m sure he will anyway!).

What can of pumpkin do I get? Just pumpkin or with spices in it?
Chelsea Johnson says
I just use plain pumpkin since you’re adding spices to it!

Regarding the recipe for Better Than Pumpkin Pie cake: I’m confused about the amount of brown sugar used. You say mix the cup of brown sugar with the milk and 3 eggs and then mix the one cup of cake mix with the remaining brown sugar. What did I miss?
Chelsea Johnson says
There’s a second measure of brown sugar in the ingredients. It’s 1/2 cup.
Chrid says
This has become one of our Thanksgiving deserts. We love to have it for Thanksgiving breakfast!
