One thing that I was not prepared for after my first baby was born was the postpartum hair loss. Even now that I’m on my third baby, I am still amazed at how much hair I am losing. I’m not talking about a few strands falling out here and there, either. If that’s you, consider yourself very blessed (and also I hate you). I’m talking about losing enough hair every time I shower and brush my hair that I could’ve made a wig (or possibly two) for someone by now, and my son is only five-months-old. MADNESS. Depressing madness, I might add.
Anyway, it’s gotten to the point where I have had to make a few changes to take better care of my hair. I mean I’m only 28–I can’t afford to go bald yet. And yes, I know it’s going to stop one day and my hair will get back to normal, but I’m impatient and don’t want to wait that long. If you’re in the same situation as me, I am so sorry, and I am here today to share some helpful tips for postpartum hair care that can help you stop clogging up your shower drain.
There’s not a ton you can do to stop the hair loss, but there are definitely a few tricks you can use to make it less noticeable and less annoying.
1. Drink more water. Isn’t that the first thing on like every list ever? Drinking water will help make your hair stronger and grow faster, which is especially helpful when you keep losing so dang much every day. Plus there are like 1,000 other benefits to drinking more water, too, so you can’t go wrong with this one!
2. Get proper nutrition. Eating enough protein, iron, Vitamin C, Omega-3s, and other vitamins and minerals will help your hair be stronger, less likely to break, and even grow faster. And you’ll feel better, too!
3. Wear pony tails or mom buns. I do not like wearing pony tails. I much prefer to style my hair and wear it down. But there’s a reason that such a thing as a “mom bun” exists. I have noticed that the days I pull my hair back, I find less hairs on my shirt and I don’t see as many hairs in the sink or on my pillow. I really don’t like finding hair everywhere, and wearing a pony tail really helps minimize that!
4. Use volumizing or repairing shampoo and conditioner. Since your hair needs all the help it can get in both growing and looking more full, using volumizing or repairing shampoo and conditioner is a must. I’ve heard amazing things about this volumizing shampoo, and I really like how my hair feels when I use this damage repairing conditioning balm. Yes, you might have to splurge a little on your hair products, but it will be worth it!
5. Take a biotin supplement. Biotin is famous for making hair and nails grow faster and stronger, so taking a little every day can help with postpartum hair loss. If you’re breastfeeding, check with your doctor first.
6. Cut that hair. If you’re tired of finding long hairs all over your house and in your shower drain, try cutting a few inches off! I cut about 6 inches off after Little A and Little R were both born, and it definitely helps! Plus it makes styling a lot easier because let’s be honest, new mamas don’t have a ton of time to get ready in the morning!
7. Stay away from the heat. I was blowdrying my hair about twice a week and using a curling wand every day, and my hair was getting pretty dry and brittle. So I tried letting it air dry as much as I could and started curling it only once or twice a week, and it already feels a lot softer. Plus, I am not losing as much hair because I’m not messing with it as much. Win, win.
Postpartum hair loss is just another fun consequence of having a baby. You thought everything would go back to normal after your baby was born? Oh, sorry. Nope. Luckily, it won’t be as noticeable or as much of a hassle if you use these tips for postpartum hair care. So go ahead and rock that pony tail, mama. And remember that it won’t last forever!

Right? Oh man, it’s horrifying when you loose that much hair! I’m hoping mine stops soon and starts growing back!

Hello, Chelsea!
Indeed, there are lots of changes that occur in the body right after giving birth. For hair care, I suggest eating protein and collagen rich foods to improve hair strands and make them stronger!

Nicky
